Simple storage sizing model

RSC=MDD×ADIE×BCE×BDE×DoD×TCF\text{RSC} = \frac{\text{MDD} \times \text{AD}}{\text{IE} \times \text{BCE} \times \text{BDE} \times \text{DoD} \times \text{TCF}}

Where:

  • RSC (Required Storage Capacity): Capacity needed to fulfill energy requirements during autonomy days, in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
  • MDD (Max Daily Deficit): The largest energy deficit in a day, in kWh. Calculated from historical data and consumption patterns.
  • AD (Autonomy Days): Days the system operates without solar input, chosen based on application criticality and worst-case scenarios.
  • IE (Inverter Efficiency): Efficiency of DC to AC conversion, usually between 90% and 98%.
  • BCE (Battery Charge Efficiency): Efficiency of storing incoming DC, typically 85% to 95%.
  • BDE (Battery Discharge Efficiency): Efficiency of providing DC electricity, also 85% to 95%.
  • DoD (Depth of Discharge): Utilized battery capacity percentage, recommended to maximize lifespan, often 50% to 80%.
  • TCF (Temperature Correction Factor): Adjusts capacity based on average temperature, ranging from 0.9 to 1.1, with 1 for room temperature (25°C or 77°F).
